Redesign of UMass Dartmouth student newspaper, The Torch.
I worked with the UMass Dartmouth newspaper The Torch for three years. The first two years I served as design editor, managing the design team and coordinating/assigning photography staff. I also spent a lot of time working with editors to improve the quality of the content (which in turn, improved the designs we were able to produce). My work in this manner led to my being elected managing editor for my third and final year, overseeing all aspects of editorial and design.
One of the first primary tasks was to successfully lead a redesign of the paper overall. The above flag treatment (top left) was born from extensive collaboration with the rest of the organization. Previous treatments were often sloppy and ill-conceived. Special attention was made to ensure the new flag was recognizable and distinctive, as it would serve as a thematic element (the flame) throughout the paper and any derivative products.
One such product, launched during my final year was Firebrand (bottom right), a quarterly special section offering in-depth features of happenings on and around campus.
